MARQUEZ ROA, NA; LEMIR DE ZELADA, MO  e  MOLAS, AC. Serological frequency of Trypanosoma cruzi in blood donors in Paraguay between 2006 and 2011. Mem. Inst. Investig. Cienc. Salud [online]. 2013, vol.11, n.2, pp.26-31. ISSN 1812-9528.

Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi) infection can be transmitted by blood transfusions. Therefore, it should be studied in zones inhabited by potentially infected donors. Currently, blood transfusion is the second via to acquire T. cruzi infection only preceded by vector transmission in diverse regions of America. This paper collects data obtained from monthly statistical reports from 2006 to 2011 in the different Blood Services of Paraguay depending on the Blood National Program. The study showed that the country-level reactive serology for T. cruzi in blood donors ranges from 2.55 to 3.29% in that period. Currently, the departments with a frequency of reactive cases greater than the national average are Pdte. Hayes, Ñeembucú, Cordillera, San Pedro, Concepción, Central, Paraguarí, Caaguazú, Canindeyú, Misiones, with a significant increase in cases of reactive serology in Asuncion, capital of the country, which together with Central Department are the greater centers of migratory movement of the country.
