The influence of vitamin D deficiency in postmenopausal women is a major issue for the implications in the phospho-calcium metabolism and their possible association in the development of other pathologies. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in a population of postmenopausal women and its association with changes in the phospho-calcium metabolism and the development of osteoporosis. We included 67 postmenopausal women from a rheumatology outpatient clinic. We considered the following clinical variables (ie age, weight), laboratory (ie concentrations of calcium, phosphorus and PTH) and the presence or absence of osteopenia or osteoporosis. The value of the mean age of patients was 66 ± 11.29 years and we observed vitamin D concentrations below 30 ng/ml in 50 (74.6%) patients. Also, we found osteopenia or osteoporosis in an important part of our patients but did not find a significant correlation between the concentrations of vitamin D and calcium and phosphorus concentrations. We found a negative correlation in relation to the concentrations of PTH (P = 0.049). Patients with osteoporosis or osteopenia frequently present hypovitaminosis D and because of this, there is a need for early detection and treatment to prevent the serious complications that could accompany the loss of bone density in these patients.
