Resumen

MENDOZA, LP et al. Clinical-demographic characteristics and typification of the human papilloma virus in Paraguayan women with negative citology for squamous intraepithelial lesion. Mem. Inst. Investig. Cienc. Salud [online]. 2012, vol.10, n.1, pp.46-55. ISSN 1812-9528.

Paraguay has a high incidence of cervical cancer in women of 35/100,0000 in 2008 and the human papilloma virus (HPV) is the causative agent. The planning of preventive measures can be benefited by the knowledge of the viral types. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the clinical and demographic characteristics of the HPV types present in women with negative cytology for squamous intraepithelial lesion. This was a cross-sectional study with an analytical compound in 207 women with negative cytology for squamous intraepithelial lesion from health centers in Asunción. The typification was performed by polymerase chain reaction using MY09/11 and GP5/GP6 primers, followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism and reverse linear hybridization. The association between HPV and clinical-demographic characteristics was determined by chi-square analysis (EpiInfo version 3.2). A high frequency of HPV (21%) was detected being the predominant type HPV 16 (4.3%) followed by HPV 58/31 (2.4% each). An association between the presence of HPV and age was observed (p=0.0002) and a higher frequency of HPV in women younger than 30 years was detected which decreased when age increased, showing a slight increase in women of 60 years or more. In conclusion, the data show a high frequency of HPV and HPV 16 in women under 30 years of age with negative cytology and suggest a need for further monitoring in order to identify persistent infections that could cause cervical lesion.
