ABSTRACT The informed consent of the patient is the acceptance of the diagnosis or treatment suggested by the professional after providing the due information. According to the Criminal and Health Codes of Paraguay, it is mandatory with particular emphasis on the comprehension of the patient and in the fact that the provided written information is clear, simple and complete. The objective of this study was to evaluate the perception and comprehension of the informed consent in patients that attended the Faculty of Odontology in 2010 with the purpose of taking corrective actions if necessary. In an observational descriptive cross-sectional study, a self-administered questionnaire was applied to 145 patients including fourteen questions divided in three sections: demographic data, perception and comprehension. Sufficient perception and comprehension was observed in 62% of the participants and 82% of the patients thought that signing the document exempted the professional from criminal liability. No statistical significance was observed when the academic level was associated to perception and comprehension of the informed consent p=5.9 (Fischer) p> 0.005.
