Abstract

Cervical cancer is the second malignant neoplasia in women population worldwide being the human papilloma virus (HPV) the main causative agent. The aim of this preliminary study was to determine the type of HPV in women that attended the National Institute of Cancer in December, 2007 by polymerase chain reaction associated with restriction enzymes digestion (PCR-RFLP) and to observe the frequency of other risk factors associated with cancer. HPV was detected in 14 of 15 women with abnormal results of cytology and/or colposcopy. Eight of 14 samples were positive for high risk HPV-HR HPV (types 16, 31, 58, 33, 45) and 6 of these women showed biopsy results of I and III cervical intraepithelial neoplasias (CIN I and CIN III). A case of multiple infections with 33 and 45 HR-HPV types was observed. In seven cases, a lack of concordance between the results of cytology, colposcopy and biopsy was observed. In these cases, the detection of HR-HPV types contributed to identify women with higher risk of developing CIN. In some cases, the presence of other risk factors for CIN was observed such as smoking for ten and thirty years and the use of oral contraceptives for twenty years. In conclusion, the preliminary results obtained suggest that the detection of HPV types by PCR-RFLP can be useful to orientate the management of the patient.
