Abstract

MOREL DE FESTNER, JC. Knowledge, attitudes and practices about smoking habits in students of Nursery and Obstetrics from Instituto "Dr Andrés Barbero" 2007. Mem. Inst. Investig. Cienc. Salud [online]. 2008, vol.6, n.2, pp.38-47. ISSN 1812-9528.

The study of smoking in people in the phase of academic education is important considering that they will orientate about the risks of chronic diseases in the future. This cross-sectional observational descriptive study with an analytical component determined prevalence, characteristics of the smoking habit, knowledge and attitudes towards the smoking in students registered in 2007 in the Institute "Dr. Andrés Barbero" of the Asunción National University. The students who accepted participating in the study received semi-structured questionnaires that were filled in anonymously. The prevalence of smoking was 16.8%, being significantly higher in men that in women (35.1% vs 9.6%, chi2 test, p<0,0001); in those that were in fourth year (34.8%) that those that were in first, second and third years (7.5%, 10.6% and 16.9, chi2 test, p <0,01). More than 90% of the students had information about the harmful consequences of tobacco on health, being the school where the majority (86.0%) received information related to smoking. A high percentage of the students were in favor of the prohibition of smoking in public and closed facilities and they also admitted that health personnel have an important role to advise patients to quit smoking. In conclusion, in spite of the fact that the majority knows the damages produced by smoking and they said that they have a negative attitude towards it, the smoking prevalence among these nursing and obstetrics students is high. Therefore, Law 825 - Of Protection of Non Smokers should be enforced mainly in schools, faculties and hospitals, considering that health personnel is a role model for patients.
