Health care has been changing in the last decades, from an assistance system focused on the disease only to attention to the citizen, where more global concepts such as quality, cost, fairness and continuity take new values. The attention approach means not only treatment when the disease arrives but the creation and promotion of healthy living habits and disease prevention. At present, information and communications technologies have combined to lead to a telemedicine to provide medical assistance to those living in distant places, including health education, public and community health, development of health and prevention programs, epidemiological studies among others. In the same way, the extensive use of the Internet has contributed to incorporate a new term known as "e-health", which combines any practice of telemedicine using this network. This article offers an up-to-date view of the state of the art of telemedicine that could provide an important support but is full use will depend on all the partners involved in the implementation.
