Abstract

LASSER, A. Incidence of complications of postoperatory hemorrhage in conventional adenoidectomy in patients operated at the Hospital de Clinicas FCM-UNA. Mem. Inst. Investig. Cienc. Salud [online]. 2007, vol.5, n.2, pp.17-22. ISSN 1812-9528.

The postoperatory hemorrhage is the most studied and feared complication of the adenoidectomy because the surgery is performed in a small and very vascularized anatomical region. As the consequences of this complication are unknown in our country, the performance of the present study was decided. A descriptive retrospective study was carried out to determine the incidence of postoperatory hemorrhages by the revision of the clinical records of all the patients subjected to adenoidectomy in the Chair of Othorhinolaryngology of the Hospital de Clínicas from January, 2003 to August, 2006. The demographic data, postoperatory hemorrhages with their characteristics and management as well as other minor complications were studied. During the studied period 508 patients were subjected to adenoidectomy with a mean age of 6.4 ± 2.7 years and 56.9% of the patients were male. Hemorrhage in the first 24 hours of the postoperatory was seen in 3.15 % (n=16) of the patients; 0.8 % (4) of them were subjected to a surgical revision and a nasopharyngeal stopper was placed in 0.2 % (1). Blood transfusion was not necessary in any of the cases. The hemorrhage incidence was 3.15% and it appeared in all cases in the first 24 hours of the postoperatory. In relation to other complications, 15.6% presented vomits and 1.4% fever. Due to this, the ambulatory treatment of the patients would not be recommended.
