ABSTRACT Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a systemic inflammatory disease. Patients with SLE appear to have increased morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular diseases (CVD). On the other hand, viral and bacterial infections may serve as an environmental trigger for the development or exacerbation of SLE. In this descriptive study we analyzed the immunological profile, the presence of infectious and non infectious diseases referred by the patients with SLE. Five hundred eighty five patients attending to the Immunology department at the Instituto de Investigaciones en Ciencias de la Salud-Universidad Nacional de Asunción, during 2004 to 2006, voluntarily accepted to participate in this study and answered a questionnaire on demographic data, history of infectious and non infectious diseases, were tested for antinuclear antibodies ANA, anti-DNA and anticardiolipin antibodies ACA in serum samples. Eighty four percent of the patients were female, with median age of 35,2±15 years old, 91% were ANA positive, 51% showed homogenous and speckled patterns, 30%, 6% were DNA and ACA IgM positive, respectively. One hundred forty eight out of 585 patients answered to a questionnaire referring on history of infectious and non infectious diseases: 31% (46/148), referred some of them. Fifteen percent with parasitics disease (toxoplasmosis, Chagas’s disease, leishmaniosis), viral hepatitis in 30%, hypertension and diabetes in 15% and thyroid dysfunction in 15% patients. The characteristics of SLE patients were described. In order to get better understanding of SLE in our population, an analytical study could be installed considering the possibilities of co-morbidity in patients with SLE.
