GIUBI, R, M. Acute urticaria and angioedema: Etiology and clinical characterisation. Mem. Inst. Investig. Cienc. Salud [online]. 2007, vol.5, n.1, pp. 31-38. ISSN 1812-9528.

This observational, descriptive, retrospective study was carried out to determine the frequency of clinical and analytic features, the history of atopy and the etiology associated to acute urticaria and angioedema in children and adults patients. Patients: seventy two patients who attended, from 2002 to 2005, to Clinica Alergoderma were included. Sixty three percent of the patients were older than fifteen years old and 67% were female. Infectious etiology was related to 46% of the cases, drugs to 32% and food to 7%. Respiratory diseases were identified in 25% of the infectious pathologies and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs use were found in 61% of the cases of pharmacological origin. Eight cases (11%) were considered of idiopathic etiology. History of atopy was present in 29% of the patients and 53% presented acute urticaria as only reaction. Twenty nine percent of the concomitants infectious pathologies were connected to upper respiratory tracts. Urticaria and angioedema were mainly observed in june and july, a high frequency of infectious etiology was observed in the same period of the year. It is relevant to identify the etiology of acute urticaria and angioedema in order to provide an appropriated treatment to patients with this cutaneous pathology.
