This cohort retrospective study was carried out to determine the incidence, characteristics and risk factors of haematological alterations (HA) in newborns (NB) of hypertensive mothers. A follow-up of 187 pregnant women with hypertension fromtheir admissionfor delivery was carried outas well asof their 192 NB during the first week of life at the Neonatology Service of the National Hospital of Itauguá, from January 1999 to December 2001. Eighty six percent of the NB presented HA, 39% corresponding to anaemia, 19% to thrombocytopenia,13% to neutropenia,10% to blood dyscrasiaand 5% to polycitemia. Neutropenia (72%), thrombocytopenia (61%) and blood dyscrasia (60%) developed more frequently in prematurebabies. The beginning of neutropenia and thrombocytopenia was within 72h of life in more than 80% of the NB and theyweredetecteduntil the first week of life in most cases. Neutropenia and thrombocytopenia were mild to moderate in more than 90% of the NB. A higher proportion of NB of mothers with moderate-severe hypertension developed HA (p=0.04, RR=1.61). The systolic blood pressure higher than 160 mmHg was significantly associated to the development of HA (p=0.007). Despite NB of mothers with diastolic blood pressure higher than 100 mmHg presented a higher frequency of HA, the difference was not significant.
