Resumen

AQUINO FORNERON, S. Paracoccidioidomycosis: treatment with itraconazol. Mem. Inst. Investig. Cienc. Salud [online]. 2006, vol.4, n.2, pp.07-11. ISSN 1812-9528.

The paracoccidioidomycosis, a systemic fungal disease caused by the fungi Paracoccidioides brazilienzis, is treated under several schemes, and the last implemented is the developed in the last decades of XX century: the triazole antifungal Itraconazol in a six month-scheme treatment. There is not any current bibliographic evidence about the behavior of patients in response to this treatment. The objectives are to determine demographic characteristics of the patients, to evaluate the treatment scheme, the host and the percentage of dropping-out. It is an observational descriptive retrospective study that studied all the cases diagnosed with paracoccidioidomycosis, and hospitalized between January 1998 to December 2005 at the Pulmonologist Service of the Hospital de Clinicas. We found 40 patients with the diagnosis of paracoccidioidomycosis and the highest frequency was found in the age group of 41 to 60 years old. All these cases were men and 28 (70%) were from rural areas. The six month-scheme treatment was started in 34 cases and only 17 (50%) completed the treatment and 12 patients (35.3%) dropped out. Seventeen cases (50%) had good response to the treatment scheme. We found five deaths (14.7%). The age group most frequently affected by paracoccidioidomycosis was the 40-70 years old group (92.5%). The annual distribution was not uniform with 5 patients per year. Seventy percent of the patients were from rural areas, 50% completed the treatment scheme and 35.3% dropped out.
