New challenges of biodiversity management and conservation require an integral management of protected areas in order to conserve or improve the environmental health of ecosystems. Environmental health is related to the capacity of the ecosystem to provide goods for anthropic activities without compromising its spatial-time functioning, maintaining the major structure elements and recovery capacity even inside the stress and resilience proper of the ecosystem. Though there are several possibilities in biodiversity management, in this case a quality management system was successfully implemented in the nuclei area of the Biosphere Reserve based in the international ISO standard. This article indicates the most relevant aspects and recommendations for the incorporation of the management system as well as some of the lessons learned during the incorporation of the system in this type of areas.
