Resumen

DUARTE MASI, S. Bibliometric indicators of Paraguay. Mem. Inst. Investig. Cienc. Salud [online]. 2006, vol.4, n.1, pp.49-53. ISSN 1812-9528.

In 2005, the bibliometric production of Paraguay from 1973 until part of 2005 was evaluated quantitatively. The objective of this article is to show the bibliometric indicators of Paraguayan researchers and institutions. Several databases were used to perform this work such as the Science Citation Index of Philadelphia, USA, (SCI) and the ACM Press portal of New York, USA among others. The methodology consisted in selecting all the articles published between 1973 and 2005 that had Paraguayan filiation and then the author and institution were identified. Thus, 462 articles published by Paraguayan researchers were identified from 1973 to 2005. The total number of Paraguayan researchers internationally known is 139. The largest concentration is at the National University of Asunción with 214 articles followed by the Institute of Pathological Research with 38 articles. In the third place there is the Catholic University "Nuestra Señora de la Asunción" with 31 articles followed by the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare with 14 articles published. The increase of Paraguayan publications is remarkable and it could mean an improvement of the management of institutions and researchers to access to indexed scientific journals as well as to the performance of joint works with foreign institutions
