Abstract
ECHAGUE, Gloria et al. Haematological values of blood donors in Asunción, Paraguay. Mem. Inst. Investig. Cienc. Salud [online]. 2003, vol.2, n.1, pp.49-56. ISSN 1812-9528.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine the hematological values of a population of blood donors from urban and rural areas. It was carried out on 133 apparently healthy adults of both sexes, aged between 18 and 60 years old, who fulfilled the clinical desirable criteria to be donors who attended five blood banks in Asunción, Paraguay. The following parameters were studied: hemoglobin, hematocrit, red blood cells, white blood cells, platelet counts, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration. The difference between sexes for hemoglobin, hematocrit, red cell count and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration was statically significant (p< 0,05). Hematological values for red series found in this population were in the normal range reported by other studies for altitudes similar to that of Paraguay. White blood cells values in men and women were similar. Concerning platelet count, the range of women was slightly lower than the one reported by the literature.
