Decrease in the practice of breastfeeding in infants admitted to a feeding program: causes and associated factors. Pediatr. (Asunción) [online]. 2022, vol.49, n.2, pp.87-96. Introduction:

Breastfeeding (BF), among other benefits, prevents malnutrition. Therefore, it is important to know the reasons for not breastfeeding in children admitted to a feeding program.

Objectives:

To determine if the practice of breastfeeding decreases in infants once admitted to a nutritional support program, in six referral hospitals in Greater Asunción.

Materials and methods:

This was an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study carried out with children aged 6 to 24 months, admitted to a feeding program between May 2016 and April 2017, at six selected referral hospitals. The data were collected in June and July 2017. A semi-structured questionnaire was applied through direct interviewing. Sociodemographic data and BF practices were inquired about. Descriptive statistics were used in data analysis. The protocol was approved by the institutional Ethics Committee.

Results:

The data of 39 participants (21 female) with 18±4 months of age at admission to the program were analyzed, 8 (20.5%) of them diagnosed with malnutrition. Upon entering the program, 24 (61.5%) children practiced BF, of which 18 (46.2%) dropped out, the main causes being that the child did not gain weight, because of the recommendation of healthcare personnel, the perception of low breast milk production and maternal work.

Conclusion:

There is evidence of a decrease in the practice of breastfeeding in children admitted to a nutritional support program despite encouragement by healthcare personnel. It is necessary to strengthen counseling for mothers who breastfeed.
