Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the factors related to academic performance, for the 2011-2012 academic year freshmen of the Humanities area at the Atacama University, such as: social work, law, Pedagogies and English-Spanish translation, for a total of 100 students of a universe of 120. We have used the Grade Point Average as an endogenous variable to measure student’s academic performance. As exogenous variables we used: the University Selection Test, maternal education and the average high school grades. As Dummy variables we have incorporated, study and works, accordance with their career and type of institution, public or private (subsidized). After analysis, the results have shown that the variables, study and work, accordance with their career, the university selection test, the average high school grade, were statistically significant. They have a positive effect on the student’s achievement.
