ABSTRACT. The aim of this study was to determine and compare the metabolic profile of energy, protein, mineral and health in pre- and postpartum transition Holstein cows of main milk producing region in Paraguay. With this purpose blood samples were obtained at weeks -3 to -1 of delivery and 3 to 4 of lactation in which serum urea, total protein, albumin, globulins, β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), cholesterol, calcium (Ca), inorganic phosphate (Pi), magnesium (Mg), blood hemoglobin and serum activity of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were determined. Analyses were performed by spectrophotometry in the laboratories of Physiological Sciences and Clinical Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences (FCV) at the National University of Asunción (UNA). The results indicate that the metabolic condition of protein, energy, mineral and health in cows analyzed is according to the standards defined for Holstein cows from other regions. Changes were observed in blood concentrations of most evaluated analytes (decrease postpartum regarding their prepartum values for protein, albumin, Ca, Pi and hemoglobin and increased urea, cholesterol, Mg and AST) remaining unchanged only BHB values and globulins, made that are associated with changes homeostatic own transition from gestation to lactation condition. It is concluded that cows analyzed in this work have proper energy and mineral balance.
