ABSTRACT Introduction: Chronic infections of the middle ear remain an uncertainty in many aspects. Knowing this condition by its symptoms, findings at physical examination, audiological studies and imaging studies will open the doors for the clarification of many issues surrounding this condition. Therefore, this study proposes to carry out a descriptive study of the clinical otological features of individuals with COM. Materials and Methods: observational descriptive retrospective study of the medical records of 73 individuals with COM that were subjected to surgery in the period 2006 to 2008. Results: The age range was 5 to 68 years, 55 individuals were in the 10 to 29 years age group, 46 men and 27 women. Otorrhea was the main reason for consultation, the most affected ear was the right and the predominant degree of hearing loss was between mild and moderate. The contralateral ear was normal in 36 individuals, minimal structural lesions to cholesteatoma were found in the rest and 48 individuals had normal contralateral hearing. Conclusion: The majority of individuals attended the consultation between the second and third decades of life, otorrhea of years of evolution was the main problem and the degree of hearing loss was mild to moderate in most patients. There is no standard defined in relation to radiological studies. Half of the individuals had some structural alterations of the tympanic membrane in the contralateral ear with a slight functional alteration
