DI MARTINO, Beatriz et al. Dermatopathological Diagnosis of Tumors in a Pediatric Population Dermatology Department of the Hospital de Clinicas. Pediatr. (Asunción) [online]. 2009, vol.36, n.2, pp.123-126. ISSN 1683-9803.
We present a review of histopathological diagnoses of tumors made in a population of patients from 0 to 18 years of age during 4 years (2005-2008) by the Department of Dermatology of the Hospital de Clinicas of the School of Medical Sciences of the National University of Asuncion (UNA), to discover which cutaneous tumors were most frequently diagnosed by biopsy. Data regarding each patient was recorded in a database, and analysis was done of the distribution of patients by age and sex, of histopathological diagnosis by frequency and age, and of classification of tumors into specific groups. The tumor types most frequently found in biopsy were melanocytic tumors (46.9%), soft-tissue tumors (16.7%) and disorders of epidermal maturation (malformation) (16.7%). These histopathological diagnoses were distributed in varied form among the age groups, with epidermic maturation disorders predominating among infants and melanocytic tumors among pre-school, school-age and adolescent patients. The results of this study cannot be taken as an indicator of prevalence in the pediatric population in general, however, epidemiological studies such as this one do permit us a better look at one facet of pediatric dermatology, histopathology.
