To analyze critically the growing problem of consumerism, a human practice contrary to rationality and sustainability, spreading some successful ideas used and proposing new ones: is the aim of this philosophical research, which was written by a bibliographic survey, the casuistry, the logical method and the hermeneutic analysis. The work used critical analogy and irony, in order to show the irrationalities or mistakes in that human beings fall due to consumerism, especially by planned obsolescence, materialism, immediatism and excessive desire for profit. It was also analyzed how consumerism has become a kind of modern religion. Finally, in the conclusions, valid alternatives were proposed: responsible consumption, product life-cycle management, the practice of the 6Rs and the 7Rs, and eco-peace or Gaia peace (good relationship with nature).
