Artificial intelligence and scientific writing: Ethical aspects in the use of new technologies

1Universidad Nacional de Asunción, Facultad de Ciencias Médicas, Filial Santa Rosa del Aguaray, Paraguay.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the technology by which a computer, device, or other system can perform tasks that normally require human cognitive capabilities. This means that a computer system can analyze information, make decisions based on algorithms, and learn based on the information received1. In recent weeks, ChatGPT, a language model developed by OpenAI to conduct human-level conversations, has gained prominence. It is built on the GPT-3 family (autoregressive language model released in 2020 that uses deep learning to produce human-like text) of large language models and has been trained using supervised and reinforced learning techniques2. This tool has been shown to be able to solve multiple tasks and write entire paragraphs (and even essays on certain topics); according to a recent publication, this form of AI has passed Spain's MIR exam3.

This ability to mimic human cognitive abilities leads us to the next question: Will AI be able to replace researchers in terms of scientific writing? The quick answer is no. The nature of scientific research is to express and expose the ideas of authors, and this cannot be replaced by AI. However, we can use these technologies to optimize writing, as long as their use is ethical.

The use of AI for content creation would not be considered ethical, especially considering that ChatGPT generates nonexistent citations4. This tool uses a predictive model; therefore, the results are highly predictable. It would be more useful and ethical to use this tool to create a writing structure or guide, such as titles and subtitles, and to create research questions. Therefore, we need to view AI tools as facilitators of scientific writing and not as a human replacement.

While ChatGPT offers plagiarism-free writing, there are also AI tools that can detect whether a piece of writing was performed by a human or by artificial intelligence. This is an example of the GPTkit tool, which is used to detect the unethical use of AI4.

Finally, one option that could be recommended for scientific writing is Paperpal, a powerful AI option that checks the grammar of scientific writing and is especially useful for non-native English speakers. This tool performs syntax and spelling corrections, supports languages other than English, and performs the corresponding translation5.

In conclusion, the AI options cannot (and should not) replace researchers in scientific writing, and researchers should make use of these technologies with zealous ethics in order to optimize their work, create writing structures, and not content structures
